Shark Point Phuket

Shark Point Phuket

Shark Point – The Iconic Dive Site of Phuket

For many divers visiting Phuket, Shark Point is at the top of the list. These stunning pinnacles half way between Phuket and Phi Phi attract tons of life from the featureless areas surrounding it. It’s named after the leopard sharks that like to rest on the sandy bottom in the day time. They’re not so common as they used to be. After a decline in numbers for a few years, they’re becoming a common sighting again.

Even without the sharks it can be a wonderful dive. The pinnacles are festooned in soft corals, huge gorgonian sea fans and barrel sponges that host a wealth of different species. There’s at least 5 pinnacles but we only dive pinnacle 1 & 2 on a regular basis. The remaining pinnacles are a little too deep for a three dive day with no sheltered areas to complete the safety stop. Don’t worry the first two pinnacles are more than large enough to accommodate a full dive.

Anything Goes On The Shark Point Dive

Shark Point really is a dive site where you can expect anything. As well as the leopard sharks we can find grey bamboo sharks tucked in under the corals and although very infrequent we do get some whale shark sightings. Cuttlefish, kuhl’s stingrays and some very large yellowtail barracuda are all common sightings.

The small animals are also there in abundance, there’s 4 different species of clownfish, tigertail seahorses, peacock and spearing mantis shrimp as well as plenty of nudibranch’s although it’s hard looking down when there’s so much going on around you.

Large schools of snapper and chevron barracuda come close to the pinnacles when there is a bit of current. Squirrelfish and copper sweepers fill the overhangs and small caves. Everywhere you look there is something to find at Shark Point.

Diving Phuket With Hawksbill Turtles

Turtle Rock – Phi Phi Ley

If you want to go diving with turtles then Turtle Rock is the dive site for you. It's very rare that we don't see hawksbill turtles and usually more than one. They feed on the shallow shelves that run along the wall at Koh Phi Phi Ley. So shallow that snorkelers can usually see them. Quite often your safety stop is spent observing the turtles munching away on the bubble corals. They've got pretty used to divers over the years and seem to be c [...]

A Great Days Diving At Phi Phi And Shark Point

Thankfully there was no wind or waves on our way to divingPhi Phi and Shark Point. Although grey and overcast, a comfortable journey ensued with the hope of better conditions under the waves than we had above. We weren't to be disappointed. Visibility in the bay at Koh Bida Nok was excellent. A quick swim up into the shallows brought a brief glimpse of a couple of blacktip reef sharks cruising around in less than 3m of water. Why You Really Shouldn’t Pick Up Sea Shells In Phuket

If you want a souvenir from your scuba diving experience in Phuket then just taking photos is the only option you should be thinking about, picking up sea shells could land you in jail and if that shell is a cone shell then you could end up in more trouble - lots more trouble.... Being snails, unsurprisingly cone shells don't chase down their prey but sneak up on them when they're sleeping. They will bury themselves in the sand in the [...]

Cuttlefish – Cross Dressing Light Bending Camouflage Kings

Cuttlefish belong the to the mollusc family and look like something between an octopus and a squid. Unlike most molluscs, the cephalopod branch which includes cuttlefish, squid and octopus are fairly smart. Certainly compared to their simpleton slug cousins but as with all geeks there comes weirdness - lots of weirdness. Let's get the ball rolling with this cardiovascular indulgence. Cuttlefish have three hearts, one each for their two [...]
